Enter through the gates of Devils Tower National Monument, shoot some pictures of prairie dogs wreaking havoc just inside the gates, but then don't turn into a sheep. You don't have to follow the herd of cars headed to the visitor center parking lot. Instead keep a lookout for Joyner Ridge Trail on your left. It looks like a private road but is maintained and open to the public year round. Except no one knows that. You'll find another parking lot down this road, and you'll maybe snap the spectacular Christmas card photo you've been looking for your entire Black Hills vacation (your family with incredible Devils Tower). Just keep this tip to yourself -- out here we appreciate a lone wolf.
